Telemetry - what is telemetry?

Telemetry solutions have been enhanced by the Internet, enabling integration of machines with IT systems.

M2M system example

This telemetry tutorial show's how the Internet has changed the nature of traditional SCADA, which has been used for many years to provide communication within industrial sites. These were: -

  • Polling systems, where the central application connects to each device in turn for data.
  • Built using proprietary protocols, where it was difficult to interoperate with 3rd party equipment

Client driven

On the contary, the Internet and GPRS networks are client driven, where devices initiate the connections to centralised servers.

Closed, proprietary, polling architectures are not ideally suited to GPRS networks and Web environments. Premium fixed IP services are required in order to privately address remote devices.

What is M2M ?

Machine to Machine is a modern form of SCADA. It exploits the technology advances around TCP/IP protocols to create Open systems.

  • Extends traditional industrial communication utilising the Web
  • Enables a greater degree of interoperability
  • Enables central management of equipment in the field
  • Eliminate on-site management.

Benefits

The M2M networking model enables information from any assets in the field to be integrated with centralised I.T applications.

  • Know remote equipment status
  • Enhance business decisions
  • Obtain real time information
  • Removes the human element
  • Remove paper trials
  • Understand consumable usage
  • Optimise supply chain logistics
  • Reduce operational costs
  • Generate revenues
