RTU Remote Telemetry Units Monitored using the Internet
RTU devices at small sites benefit from Internet based monitoring via the wireless GPRS network to eliminate onsite costly PC and associated software.
An RTU is a Remote Telemetry Unit that monitors the status of equipment such as refrigerator temperature, door open/closed, or energy consumption. Each RTU is wired or wirelessly connected to an onsite PC, which provides SCADA management capabilities. Although this may suit large buildings and factories, it is not cost effective for managing small sites with single or low numbers of equipment.
RTU/SCADA polling systems do not suit the GPRS network and the Internet!
With 1 modem connection it could take 1-2 weeks to gather the data!
Traditionally, the problem is solved by enabling the PC to poll every device over a modem connection. However, this isn't ideal for client driven networks and has some key issues: -
- Bottlenecks where the PC communicates sequentially with remote units
- Proprietary protocols make it difficult to interoperate with 3rd parties
- Costly Infrastructure due to the private networking nature of the solution
- Not scalable for large numbers of devices with a reliable and robust network communication
Web-based SCADA and RTU solutions are cost effective and scalable
"IP Push Technologies" overcome polling bottlenecks and allow simultaneous connections to offer true real-time data.
Communications hardware
The PC can be replaced with an intelligent communication device (Box or module) that delivers data between the RTU and web-based SCADA application via the GSM/GPRS network. Protocols can be integrated within the device to locally poll, log and then deliver data.
Internet SCADA Management Software
The SCADA software manages reliable communication with each device and enables Solution Providers to offer managed services to their end users. The system can be managed "from anywhere" using a standard PC browser and eliminates the need for onsite PC software.
Enterprise Software Integration
Monitoring equipment from afar can be achieved with stand alone systems ... however, the information can also be delivered automatically into existing Enterprise business process IT systems. This can provide automated billing, invoicing, re-ordering and integration with the mobile work force.
